Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) today launched the innovative programme to tackle plastic pollution in the capital city.
Under the initiative, any person can get a free meal at 11 Aahaar centres in the city in exchange for 500 grams of plastic.
The programme was launched at an Aahaar kendra situated near Kalpana Square where BMC Commissioner Prem Chandra Chaudhary made a citizen inaugurate it.
Speaking on the occasion, the Commissioner said, “The citizen-centric initiative is a strategy to facilitate collection of household plastic from the city.”
The initiative is being implemented by the BMC in partnership with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Touch Stone Foundation.
Aahaar centres will allow exchange of only one kg plastic per person per day and issue two coupons for the same on the day, sources said.
