BMC Provides Financial Aid through CMRF to Cyclone Yaas-Hit Newspaper Hawker

Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) today provided financial assistance of Rs. 30,000 to Shri Sankarshana Behera (47), a newspaper hawker by profession, and a resident of Dhoba Sahi, Sundarpada in Ward No- 67, whose thatched house was damaged by cyclone Yaas which had left a trail of destruction in the coastal districts of the State on May 26.

Upon receiving information regarding the plight of Sankarsan Behera, BMC Commissioner Shri Sanjay Kumar Singh, who is the sanctioning authority, issued instructions for submission of detailed field enquiry report. As per the enquiry conducted by the Zonal Community Organizer Sanjukta Panda and Community Organizer Bhubaneswari Mohapatra, the application of Shri Behera for financial assistance was found to be genuine. Subsequently, Commissioner BMC sanctioned for grant of an amount of Rs.30,000 towards Livelihood Assistance.

Today morning, BMC Zonal Deputy Commissioner (South East Zone) Shri Ansuman Rath handed over the cheque for an amount of Rs 30,000 to Behera at the BMC South-East Zone Office in Samantarapur.

“With the amount received today, he should quickly construct his house and live with dignity,” said Shri Rath.

It may be mentioned here that Behera, who was living under makeshift polyethene covers after his house got severely damaged in the cyclone, was working as a Newspaper Hawker. He had to struggle to make run his family as his income dried up drastically due to COVID-19 pandemic. He has two daughters – one studying in Class-IV and another in Class-X. His wife had passed away two years ago.

Such efforts for immediate grant of assistance to the needy by BMC is being applauded on the social media as well as by the citizens of Bhubaneswar.
