Cyclone Asani Unlikely to Make Landfall in Odisha or AP

Bhubaneswar: The cyclonic storm Asani is unlikely to make landfall in Odisha or Andhra Pradesh, informed the IMD.

IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that after reaching Westcentral and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts on May 10 evening, the cyclonic storm Asani is likely to re-curve north-northeastwards and move towards Northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast.

The system is now moving towards the coast in north-westwards direction as a well-marked low pressure. The path will be north-westwards till May 10 and thereafter it will re-curve in the sea towards north-north-eastwards. After moving north-north-eastwards, the system will weaken in the sea, he said.

The condition of the sea near Odisha coast will start becoming rough from May 9, and it will become even rougher on May 10. The wind speed may go up to 80-90 kilometers per hour over the sea area, he predicted.

The Well Marked Low Pressure Area over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea is very likely to move northwestwards and intensify into a Depression over southeast Bay of Bengal during the next 3 hours and further into a Cyclonic Storm over eastcentral Bay of Bengal on 8th May, the IMD said in its bulletin.

“It is very likely to continue to move northwestwards till 10th May evening and reach Westcentral and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts. Thereafter, it is very likely to recurve north-northeastwards and move towards Northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast,” it added.

Light to moderate rainfall is very likely to commence from 10th May evening at many places over the districts of coastal Odisha and heavy rainfall (7 -11 cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, and Puri, the IMD said.
