Berhampur: In a drive against drunk driving, as many as six offenders were arrested by Berhampur Police on Sunday.
The cops also detained 21 persons for drinking public places.
Drive against drunk driving was conducted throughout Berhampur Police district. The drivers, who were found driving under the influence of alcohol, were arrested, Berhampur SP Dr. Saravana Vivek M informed.
Their vehicles are being seized and their driving licences will be cancelled, he added.
Drive against public drinking and drinking in OFF shops were conducted throughout Berhampur. The violators were detained. Prosecution report will be submitted against them in the court for further action.
The September 2019 amendment of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 mentions that in the case of drunken driving, first-time offenders will face imprisonment up to six months and/or fine up to Rs.10, 000. The second offence can lead to up to two years prison term and/or fine of Rs. 15,000.
