ECMO Treatment Begins In SCB Medical College and Hospital

Cuttack: In what could be a landmark day in providing free critical care to common people, the SCB Medical College and Hospital here has started ECMO treatment for the first time. This comes just within a day Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the state of the art ECMO Center at the SCB Medical College. A 52 year old woman suffering from lungs problem after contracting Covid-19 has been administered the ECMO treatment. Hailing from Salepur Nischintakoili area, the woman was administered the ECMO treatment at about 12 pm yesterday at the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) Department.

Senior doctors including the Medical College Principal Prof Datteswar Hota were present during the treatment. A team of doctors from Kolkata is assisting the local doctors in administering the specialized ECMO treatment.

SCB now has Eastern India’s largest ECMO center with nine state of the art ECMO machines, which will immensely help in the treatment of critical patients. The need to go outaside the state will subsidize with the full functioning of the ECMO machines. While six machines are there in the CTVS department, three are kept in the Covid isolation ward.
