England Win ICC Cricket World Cup 2019

London: England won the ODI World Cup for the first time ever after beating New Zealand in the Super Over at Lord’s in London on Sunday.

England were appearing in their fourth ODI World Cup final, losing in their previous three appearances to West Indies, Australia and Pakistan, with their previous journey to the final coming way back in 1992.

As for New Zealand, they had only made one World Cup final, but that was the last one back in 2015 and lost to Australia.

Stokes and Buttler came out to bat for England and scored 15 runs in the one over bowled by Trent Boult. Jofra Archer took the ball for England, while New Zealand sent out Martin Guptill and Jimmy Neesham.

Both teams scored 15 in the Super Over, but England are crowned champions by virtue of hitting more boundaries in their innings of 241 compared to New Zealand.

Earlier, New Zealand  set a victory target of 242 runs for England in the summit clash of the ICC Cricket World Cup at Lord’s in London.

Opting to bat, the Kiwis lost opener Martin Guptill early before Henry Nicholls and skipper Kane Williamson stabilised the innings with a 74-run second wicket stand.

But, with Williamson’s wicket, the Black Caps lost way and England managed to restrict them to 241 for 8. Pacers Liam Plunkett and Chris Woakes bagged three wickets each. Nicholls top scored with 55, while Tom Latham made 47.

Chasing 242 for victory, England were in a world of trouble at 86/4 before a 110-run partnership between Stokes (84*) and Jos Buttler (59) got them back on track.

Brief Scores: NZ 241/8 (50 overs) | ENG 241 all out (50 overs)
