Berhampur: As many as fifteen humpback species of dolphins have been spotted off the coast of Ganjam district. They were seen swimming in the Bay of Bengal waters between Gokharkuda and Puranabandha. According to Berhampur DFO Sunny Khokar, this came to the notice of forest department personnel patrolling the sea in view of the mass nesting of the rare Olive Ridley sea turtles.
Humpback and Bottlenose species of dolphins occasionally appear along the coast of the Bay of Bengal in Ganjam district, which is rich in biodiversity. Last year too, some dolphins were spotted on the coast of Ganjam during the nesting of the Olive Ridley turtles. This time too, the humpback dolphins have been spotted near the Rushikulya mouth.
