India Elected Non-permanent Member of United Nations Security Council

New Delhi: India has been elected as a member of the United Nations Security Council from the Asia-Pacific category countries. The two year term will start from January 2021. This is for the eighth time that India has become a Non-Permanent member of the world body. The elections were held yesterday and India won with a tremendous support from the Asia-Pasific Category with maximum members supporting India’s membership. India got 184 out of the 192 valid votes polled.

Reacting to India’s election, T S Trimurti, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN said, “I am delighted that India has got into the United Nations Security Council with tremendous support. I would like to express my gratitude to the member states of the United Nations for this ringing endorsement”.

“We will be joining UN Security Council on 1 Jan, 2021. It’ll be a 2-year tenure. Now, we’re in the process of getting our team in place which will shoulder these responsibilities in the Permanent Mission of India” he said.

Besides India, Ireland, Mexico and Norway were also elected to the Security Council.

This was for the eighth time that India has been elected to UNSC.
India has served seven times earlier: 1950-1951, 1967-1968, 1972-1973, 1977-1978, 1984-1985, 1991-1992 and 2011-2012.
The 15-member Security Council has five permanent members – the U.S., the U.K., France, Russia and China – and 10 non-permanent members.
