Kendrapara: Crocodile Census Starts at Bhitarkanika National Park

Kendrapara: The crocodile census started at the Bhitarkanika National Park in Kendrapara district on Monday.
Two teams are carrying out the enumeration in four ranges, as per reports.

The national park had been closed for visitors for 11 days beginning January 4 for the conduct of crocodile census.
The national park houses 1,784 saltwater crocodiles as per the census conducted in 2022.

Bhitarkanika is the second Ramsar site, a wetland of international importance, in the State after Chilika. The Odisha Government’s sustained conservation measures have made the site one of the best known wildlife sanctuaries in the country.

Bhitarkanika is home to a great variety of wildlife including spotted deer, saltwater crocodiles, water monitors, pythons and Sambars. It also houses a large number of migratory birds in winter.
