Nationwide COVID-19 Lockdown Extended till May 31

New Delhi: Amid spike in coronavirus cases across the country, the Centre today announced the extension of the nationwide lockdown for two more weeks until May 31 to contain the spread of the COVID-19.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) will come up with a new set of guidelines soon explaining what is to be permitted and restricted in different zones.

The new guidelines will be based on the suggestions made by Chief Ministers of all the states to the Home Ministry last week.

The nationwide lockdown was first imposed for 21 days starting March 25 and then extended on April 15 and later on May 4 with an aim to stem the spread of novel coronavirus.

As the third phase of lockdown ends today, the number of COVID-19 cases has breached the 90,000 mark, including 2872 deaths. As many as 34,018 persons have recovered so far. Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state with over 30,000 cases.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu joined Punjab and Mizoram in extending the lockdown till May 31. Telangana has already extended it till May 29.
