Buddha Purnima is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Lord Gautam Buddha, who was the founder of world’s fourth-largest religion Buddhism.
Lord Buddha founded Buddhism around 2,500 years back in India. According to the Hindu calendar, the first full moon day of the Vaisakha month is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Gautam Buddha across the world. It is believed that on this day Lord Buddha was born as Prince Siddhartha Gautam in Lumbini (modern day Nepal).
This day is celebrated by Buddhists across the globe with full fervour and joy. Buddhists also come together to chant mantras, meditate, offer prayers at temples and donate alms to the needy.
This auspicious day is also known as Vesak, Buddha Day, Buddha Purnima or Buddha Jayanti. Some people also believe that on this day, Lord Gautam Buddha attained Nirvana under the Mahabodhi tree in Bodh Gaya.
