Sambalpur: Internet Services Shut Down For 48 Hours In View Of Tensions

Sambalpur: The State Government has ordered for shutting down of internet services in the district for the next 48 hours effective immediately. The decision was taken after tension erupted between two groups yesterday evening and the situation remains tense till now. Tension erupted yesterday evening during a Hanuman Jayanti rally in which more than ten police personnel including two IICs were injured. The Sambalpur district administration has already clamped prohibitory order in the jurisdiction of five police stations in Sambalpur town in view of the tensions.

According to a notification issued by the Home Department, the situation is critical and miscreants are circulating false and inflamatory messages through social media to disturb the public order in Sambalpur District and messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Face Book, Twitter and other such media etc. have the potential to inflame communal passions thereby leading to acts causing disturbance of public order in Sambalpur District.

Therefore, in order to prevent the spread of such inflammatory and motivated messages to circulate in the above mentioned media to disturb the public order in Sambalpur District and to restore peace and amity, temporary suspension of telecom services have been imposed.
