Puri: The Jagannath Temple in Odisha’s pilgrim city of Puri has received over Rs 3 lakh donation from devotees in a single day today, the highest in the last 10 months.
The donation box (hundi) at Srimandir received Rs 3,16,678 cash, 30 milligram of gold and 26 gram 680mg of silver from the devotees offering prayers to the deities on Friday, according to the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA).
It is the record collection in a single day in the last 10 months.
The 12th century shrine had collected over Rs 2 lakh from the hundi on January 21, the day the SJTA allowed the public to visit the temple without COVID-19 negative reports.
Hundi is one of the major sources of income of the shrine.
Notably, the Jagannath temple was reopened for the residents of Puri from December 23 last year after almost nine months. From January 3 this year, the temple was opened for all pilgrims. However, visitors were required to present COVID-19 negative reports as well as valid identity cards to gain entry. A maximum of 5,000 devotees were being allowed to have daily darshan from January 3.
The number of visitors has been increased to 30,000 daily from January 21.
