New Delhi: Tensions continue to prevail in and around Northeast Delhi for the fourth consecutive day as the death toll in the clashes mounted to 20. Over 180 people have been injured.
Meanwhile, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Delhi Police are conducting a flag march at Bhagirathi Vihar in Gokulpuri.
CM Arvind Kejriwal has said that the police has been unable to control the situation and that the Army should be called in. He added that he will write to Home Minister Amit Shah to that effect.
UN chief Antonio Guterres is closely following the situation in New Delhi and stresses that demonstrators should be allowed to demonstrate peacefully and security forces should show restraint.
“I think it’s very important that demonstrators be allowed to demonstrate peacefully and that security forces show restraint. This is the SG’s constant position,” Secretary General Guterres’ spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said at the daily press briefing Tuesday.
When asked if the UN is monitoring the situation, Dujarric said “Yes, we’re obviously following it closely.”
Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram described the violence in Delhi as a colossal failure of Delhi Police.
“Whether the violence erupted in East Delhi (MOS-Home) or spontaneous (MHA), the government has a duty to end the violence. The violence has continued since Monday and there are still incidents of violence. This shows the massive failure of Delhi Police,” Chidambaram tweeted.
