UN Agency Lauds Odisha’s Efforts in Saving Lives of Women & Newborns during Humanitarian Emergencies

Bhubaneswar: A UN agency has lauded the Odisha Government’s efforts in saving the lives of women and newborns during the severe cyclonic storm Yaas.

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), India has praised Odisha’s efforts in saving the lives of women and newborns during humanitarian emergencies.

“During humanitarian emergencies, we must protect the right to access sexual & reproductive health services to save the lives of women & newborns, ensure accountability for human safety & well-being, & take into account the special needs of women”, the UN agency said.

Odisha shows how it’s done, it added.

Amidst raging Cyclone Yaas fury, 750 babies were born in government hospitals in the cyclone Yaas affected districts in Odisha.

As many as 4555 pregnant women were identified ahead of landfall with expected date of delivery in June 1st week, of which 2107 shifted to hospitals for institutional delivery.
