UP BJP confident of continuing winning streak in urban local bodies polls

Lucknow:  The BJP in Uttar Pradesh is confident of continuing its winning streak in the upcoming urban local bodies elections.

Elections in 199 Nagar Palika parishads (NPP) and 438 Nagar panchayat (NP) seats in the urban local bodies (ULB) polls are expected in November-December.

The party will start holding meetings in all six organisational regions followed by meetings in districts, divisions and eventually at the booth level to draw up a electoral strategy for the civic polls, touted as crucial before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The meetings are scheduled to be chaired by UP BJP chief Bhupendra Chaudhary and state general secretary (organisation) Dharampal Singh Saini.

In the 2017 urban local bodies polls, the BJP had won 14 out of 16 municipal corporations.

However, when it came to the NPP, the party could win just 47 out of 198 seats. The Samajwadi Party won 29, BSP 18 and Congress five. The rest of the seats were won by independent candidates.

In the polls for the 438 Nagar panchayat chairman, the ruling BJP won 81 seats, the SP 67, the BSP 34 and the Congress 15.

UP BJP spokesperson Harish Chandra Srivastava said, “Every election is important for the party. The party is confident of improving its performance in NPP and NPs which are equally crucial as that of municipal corporations.”

Sources said BJP has already zeroed in on districts which are electorally important from the perspective of being semi-urban in character which is a key focus area for the BJP’s organisational structure.
