Odisha Assembly Passes Resolution to Demand Paika Bidroha as First War of Independence

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Legislative Assembly today passed a resolution to demand the Centre to declare Paika Bidroha or the Paika Rebellion as the first War of Independence of India.

Minister of State Tourism and Culture Jyoti Prakash Panigrahi introduced the resolution in the House.

The resolution was passed in the Assembly amid ruckus by opposition. It will be sent to the Centre for due consideration.

Earlier on Monday, the BJD Parliamentary Party members submitted a memorandum to the Union Minister of State for Culture Arjun Ram Meghwal demanding declaration of the Paika Bidroha as the first War of Independence of India.

The State Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, had passed a resolution in 2017 to recommend the Centre to declare Paika Bidroha as First War of Independence.
