Justice UU Lalit Takes Oath As The 49th Chief Justice Of India

New Delhi: Justice Uday Umesh Lalit has been sworn in as the 49th Chief Justice of India. President Droupadi Murmu today administered the Oath of Office to the new Chief Justice of India at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. CJI Uday Umesh Lalit succeeds Justice NV Ramana, who retired yesterday.

The Swearing In Ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, former Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, former President Ramnath Kovind, Supreme Judges and other dignitaries.

CJI Lalit will have a brief stint as he will retire on November 8 after holding the post of CJI for about three months. He is the second CJI to be directly elevated to the Supreme Court bench from the Bar. Earlier, Justice S M Sikri, who became the 13th CJI in January 1971, was the first lawyer to be elevated directly to the top court bench in March 1964.
