Four held for murder of two abducted schoolchildren in Kolkata

Kolkata: The Bidhannagar City Police have arrested four persons in connection with the murders of Atanu De and Abhishek Naskar who were abducted from near their residence at Baguihati-Kestopur on the northern outskirts of Kolkata 15 days ago. Their bodies were recovered from Basirhat in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal a few days back.

The four arrested persons are Avijit Basu, Shamim Ali, Sahil Molla and Dipendra Bose. Another accused, Satyendra Chowdhury, is absconding.

The family members of the victim school students alleged that although they reported the matter to the Bidhannagar City Police on August 22, the day the two children went missing, a formal FIR was registered only on August 24. The family members also alleged that although the bodies were recovered a few days back from Basirhat and were kept in a local mortuary as unclaimed bodies, the police informed them about it only on September 5. They also alleged that although they informed the Baguihati Police about the ransom letter they received, the police did not take the matter seriously.

The state women & child development department has now sought detailed reports from the district magistrate and the police superintendent of North 24 Parganas in this matter.

Reacting to these allegations, the deputy commissioner (detective department) of Bidhannagar City Police, Bishwajit Ghosh, said that if a formal complaint was lodged in the matter, the role of the Baguihati Police station will be probed.
