BeMC Becomes First ULB in Country to Transform Women Sanitation Workers into Entrepreneurs

Berhampur: Odisha’s Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has received national recognition for its efforts to transform women sanitation workers into entrepreneurs.

The BeMC has facilitated loan benefits to 7 women Safaimitras under Rehabilitation of Manual Scavengers Scheme, thus enabling them to become the Berhampur Swacchta Bahini Entrepreneurs by owning sewer and septic tank cleaning machines.

These women entrepreneurs belong to different Self-Help Groups (SHGs) of Mission Shakti. They will now own, operate and manage the cleaning machines for liquid waste management in the city.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has lauded the BeMC for its efforts in empowering the women.

“Berhampur Municipal Corporation becomes 1st ULB to give loan benefits to women under Rehabilitation of Manual Scavengers Scheme. In doing so they have transformed 7 Women Safaimitras into “Berhampur Swacchta Bahini” Entrepreneurs, who now own sewer/septic tank cleaning machines”, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs tweeted.

Earlier, the Odisha Housing and Urban Development Department has congratulated the BeMC for the achievement.
