Naveen’s Leadership Powers BJD to Maintain Its Dominance in By-Polls 

Bhubaneswar: The landslide victory of Biju Janata Dal in the Jharsuguda Assembly by-election has once again reaffirmed the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik-led party’s strong dominance in the electoral politics of Odisha. This victory also affirms peoples’ continual support for leadership of Naveen Patnaik and his transformative initiatives that steered Odisha into a new era of development.

Ridding on the popularity of Naveen Patnaik, the BJD has won seven out of the eight by-elections held in Odisha after the 2019 Assembly elections, where the party had scripted a history victory to form the government for record fifth consecutive terms.

BJD candidate Dipali Das has registered a landslide victory in the Jharsuguda by-poll. A debutant in electoral politics, Dipali Das won the election with a huge margin of 48,721 votes from nearest rival Tankadhar Tripathy of the BJP.

Besides Jharsuguda, the ruling party had won the by-polls held in Bijepur, Balasore Sadar, Tirtol, Pipli, Brajrajnagar and Padmapur Assembly constituencies.

In Bijepur by-election, Rita Sahu registered an impressive victory for the BJD defeating Sanat Gartia of the BJP by a record margin of 97,990 votes. BJD candidate Swarup Kumar Das clinched the BJP’s stronghold Balasore Sadar constituency by winning the election with a margin of 13351 votes. Similarly in Tirtol, Bijaya Shankar Das of the BJD garnered a total of 88,310 votes defeating his nearest rival, BJP’s Rajkishore Behera by a margin of 41,703 votes.

The party retained the Pipili Assembly seat with Rudra Pratap Maharathy wining the by-poll with a margin of 20,916 votes. Similarly, in Brajrajnagar assembly by-poll Alaka Mohanty had registered an overwhelming victory for the BJD. She won the election with a margin of 65,999 votes defeating Congress heavyweight Kishore Patel.

In the Padmapur by-election, BJD candidate Barsha Singh Bariha registered an emphatic win over BJP leader Pradip Purohit with margin of over 42,000 votes.

The Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik-led BJD had also registered impressive victory in the elections for Zilla Parishads and urban local bodies.

All these results show that the BJD enjoys a pro-incumbency for more than two decades due to the good governance of the Chief Minister.
