Niti Aayog Report: Odisha Records Remarkable Reduction In Poverty In Five Years

Bhubaneswar: The Multidimensional Poverty Index 2023 released by the Niti Aayog has said that 13.5 crore people in India have been moved out of multidimensional poverty between the period of 2015-16 and 2019-21. Among the states, Odisha has also recorded significant reduction in poverty. According to the report released yesterday, during the period, 62,62,852 people have been freed from poverty in Odisha. During the period, the rate of poverty has been reduced from 29.34 percent to 15.86 percent in the state. In villages, the poverty has been reduced from 32.64 to 17.72 percent whereas in urban areas, the poverty rate has decreased from 12.32 percent to 5.42 percent.

According to the report, Malkangiri remains at the top of the poverty level in Odisha with 45.01 percent people remaining below poverty line. Puri, with 3.29 percent people below poverty has the lowest poverty percentage.

The report states that, the poverty rate in Rayagada district is 34.03 percent, Koraput 33.54 percent, Nabarangpur 33.45 percent and Mayurbhanj 30.57 percent. Compared to 2015-16, poverty has decreased in all districts of the state in 2019-20. Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Cuttack, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Jharsuguda, Sonepur, Kendrapara, Balangir and Sambalpur have poverty rates below 10 percent.
