Ammonia gas leak in Bihar milk facility, one dead

Patna: One person died and over two dozen fell ill due to the leakage of ammonia gas from a milk cum ice cream facility in Bihar’s Hajipur city.

The incident happened late on Saturday night.

The deceased, Deenanath Singh, was an employee of the Raj Milk and dairy product facility in Hajipur city and a resident of Maner in Patna district.

The leakage started around 9.45 p.m. on Saturday and soon affected the employees. Over two dozen employees were present there and they fell unconscious due to breathing problems.

The local residents, after the mishap, started fleeing from the place. A panic-like situation emerged for some time, but the district administration took control of the situation.

“We learnt about the leakage of ammonia gas from the milk facility and immediately pressed the rescue operation. The district police along with fire brigade and QRT of Patna immediately reached the spot and rescued the unconscious employees. They were admitted in Sadar hospital Hajipur,” said Yashpal Meena, district magistrate of Vaishali.

The district fire officials sprinkled water in the affected area to minimize the effect of ammonia gas.

Vaishali civil surgeon claimed that the situation was under control and the sick persons were undergoing treatment under oxygen protocol.
