Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: BJD Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Amar Patnaik wrote to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan recommending for establishment of an Odia Language Department at Delhi University.
In his letter, the BJD MP said that there are dedicated language departments for Bangla, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu and courses are offered for these languages under B.A Programme and Language Course Programme.
“I commend the work that has been done by the University so far to promote several regional languages; it is an integral aspect of preserving and promoting Indian culture and celebrating diversity. I am hopeful same effort will be made for Odia”, Patnaik suggested.
“As you are aware, Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik has always held that Odia language is a crucial facet of Odia identity and self-esteem. I am sure you will agree that every effort must be made to support and empower students who are eager to learn and expand the scope of their culture and language through formal education”, the BJD MP mentioned in the letter.
In 2014, Odisha became the sixth language to be awarded the Classical Language status by the Central Government, and the first from the Indo-Aryan category. Odia’s long history of contributions to literature and the fact that it is quite unique from other languages makes it an important cultural asset. If professional training can he imparted at the national level by a Central University, it would not only be a matter of pride for Odisha, but also a boon for the entire country. It would be an opportunity available not only to students from Odisha but also for anyone wishing to learn a beautiful language and carry it forward for future generations, the BJD MP stated.
Research done by the Delhi Odia Students Association has found that there are around 200 students at Delhi University who have confirmed their interest in formally pursuing Odia courses at the university. There are also 61 teachers across departments who are from Odisha and will likely appreciate an effort for cultural representation at the University level, he further stated.
