BSF jawan commits suicide in Bengal’s Nadia district

Kolkata: A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan posted at the Indo- Bangladesh border in Nadia district of West Bengal committed suicide by shooting himself on Tuesday afternoon.

The dead jawan has been identified as Sanjay Patel, a resident of Gujarat. The incident took place at a BSF camp located at Nafarchandrapur in Nadia district.

Sources said that on Tuesday afternoon the other BSF jawans posted at the camp suddenly heard firing sound from within the camp. When they rushed in, they saw Patel lying on the ground profusely bleeding. His service rifle was there just beside his body. It is assumed that he shot himself from his service rifle only.

Patel was immediately rushed to the local Tehatta Sub-divisional Hospital, where he was declared dead. The local police as well as Patel’s colleagues suspect that probably he committed suicide out of mental depression. However, none could confirm the exact reason behind his depression.

In August this year, a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) trooper opened indiscriminate fire with his AK-47 rifle in Kolkata, killing a colleague and critically injuring another. The killer trooper too was reportedly in mental depression as he was denied leave for a long time.

Earlier in June this year, a Kolkata Police constable, deputed for security of Bangladesh Deputy High Commission at busy Park Circus, opened fire with his Insas rifle, killing one woman, before committing suicide.
