New York, Feb 9 (IANS) The US is still averaging close to 2,600 Covid-19 deaths a day, up 18 per cent from two weeks ago and the highest toll since last winter and above the peak surge in the fall when the Delta variant was dominant, reported MarketWatch.
Now that the highly infectious Omicron variant is dominant, cases have fallen steeply from their January peak, but are still averaging 295,922 a day, down 57 per cent from two weeks ago, Xinhua news agency reported.
Hospitalisations are down 23 per cent from two weeks ago at 121,600 a day on average, according to the US business news website on Monday.
On a global basis, the total tally for Covid-19 cases hiked up above 395.3 million, and the death toll rose above 5.74 million, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
The US leads the world with a total of 76.5 million and a death toll at 902,626, said the website.
