Ahmedabad: Following the death of 28 people in Ahmedabad Rural and Botad districts in Gujarat due to the consumption of illicit liquor, the opposition has slammed the state government over the poor implementation of liquor prohibition policy. The ruling party on the other hand has accused the opposition of playing “dirty political games”.
With the Assembly elections near, all the political parties are making a beeline to meet the affected people. The opposition leaders as well as the Ministers and other BJP leaders are all rushing to meet the affected families and trying to score points.
Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi paid visits to the Ahmedabad civil hospital where the affected patients are admitted. Health Minister Rishikesh Patel and Education Minister Jitu Vaghani and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal visited the victims in Bhavnagar hospital. Gujarat Congress president Jagdish Thakor, Leader of Opposition Sukhram Rathwa, MLA Jignesh Mewani visited the victim’s family in Rojid village of Botad and later visited the patients in Bhavnagar hospital.
Thakor said, “Ruling party is protecting people who are running illegal liquor business in the state for election fund. Even after being warned about this, police did not act. This is just not lapse but protection, for which police are given bribes. Because of illicit liquor 28 persons have lost their lives, so the government should pay minimum Rs 10 lakh compensation to each deceased’s family.”
Independent MLA Jignesh Mewani wants the state monitoring cell head Superintendent of Police Nirlipt Rai to be assigned to investigate the hooch tragedy.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national Joint Secretary Isudan Gadhvi, blamed the state government for its failure, and demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi should resign. They don’t have any morale to continue in the office after 28 deaths.
Jitu Vaghani, Education Minister said, “This is not the time to play politics and try to score, it is a tragic incident, everyone is sympathetic towards families who have lost their loved ones.”
He said the state police alertness has stopped a major tragedy, “had not the police acted fast and all 600 liters of methyl alcohol would have been consumed, many lives would be lost,” he said.
