INS Vikrant: India’s First Indigenously Built Aircraft Carrier Commissioned

Kochi: India’s first indigenous Aircraft Carrier INS Vikrant was commissioned today by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Cochin Shipyard. The 45 thousand tonne INS Vikrant is the largest ever ship to be built in India at a cost of Rs 20,000 crore.

While the Warship has undergone yearlong sea trials, aircraft landing trials on board the INS Vikrant will begin in November this year and are expected to be completed by 2023. With the commissioning of the INS Vikrant, India has entered the select league of nations such as the US, the UK, Russia, China and France that have the capability to build aircraft carriers. The warship has been built by Cochin Shipyard Limited at Kochi.

Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated the new ensign of the Indian Navy during the commissioning program.

Speaking during the Commissioning program, PM Modi said “Today, India joins the countries that build such large aircraft carriers with indigenous technology. Today, INS Vikrant has filled India with new trust…On this historic occasion, I express gratitude to Indian Navy, all engineers, scientists & workers of Cochin Shipyard.”
