Jammu: J&K chief electoral officer (CEO) Hirdesh Kumar has called an all-party meeting around 4 p.m. on Monday to discuss the summary revision of electoral rolls.
The invitation has been sent to all political parties and the democratic process that is starting after the delimitation would be discussed at the meeting, sources said.
The CEO is expected to clear the air about 25 lakh new eligible voters in the UT. His earlier statement on this issue had ruffled many a political feather among the political parties except the BJP.
The CEO will clear the doubts on this issue notwithstanding the fact that the government has already said that there has been misrepresentation of facts on this issue, sources added.
The government has said that the revision of electoral rolls will cover existing residents of Jammu and Kashmir and the increase in numbers will be of the voters who have attained the age of 18 years as of October 1 or earlier.
In his last media interaction, the CEO had said, “After the abrogation of Article 370, many people who weren’t voters in the Assembly elections can now be named in the voter’s list to cast their vote and no person needs to be a permanent resident of the state/UT for this purpose”.
According to the schedule, the Integrated Draft Electoral Roll would be published by all Electoral Registration Officers on September 15.
The period between September 15 and October 25 has been earmarked for filing claims and objections and all disposals in this regard would be completed by November 10. Checking of health parameters and obtaining the Commission’s permission for final publication, updating the database and printing of supplements are to be done by November 19. The Final Electoral Roll would be published on November 25, 2022.
