New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday announced the schedule for the upcoming General Elections and some state Assemblies including Odisha.
As per the ECI announcement, the General Elections and Odisha Assembly Elections will be held simultaneously in four phases on May 13, May 20, May 25 and June 1.
Announcing the poll schedule in a press conference, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said that the ECI is fully prepared for the biggest festival of Indian democracy.
“We are committed to give the nation a truly festive, democratic environment. The term of the 17th Lok Sabha is due to expire on 16th June 2024. The terms of the Legislative Assemblies of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim are also due to expire in June 2024”, the CEC said.
India gets ready for celebration of democracy with 97 crore voters, 1.5 crore polling officials and 10.5 lakh polling stations. Over 55 lakh EVMs will be deployed for the General Elections 2024, the CEC said.
He referred to the General Elections 2024, a historic opportunity when Indians will together express their will once again. Promises to deliver a national election that will remain a beckon for electoral democracies across the world, he added.
The daunting challenges in conducting free and fair elections are four-fold, the 4Ms – muscle, money, misinformation, and MCC violations, said the CEC while adding that that the Commission is committed and has put in place measures to deal with these disruptive challenges.
Tenure of the current Odisha Assembly ends on June 24 and the tenure of the 17th Lok Sabha ends on June 16.
