Man held in Lucknow airport for trying to smuggle gold

New Delhi: The Customs officials at Lucknow airport has arrested a man for allegedly trying to smuggle in gold valued at Rs 15.66 lakh by hiding it in the soles of his shoes, an official said on Thursday.

The passenger had come to Lucknow from Dubai on March 31.

“On the basis of suspicion, the passenger was intercepted. On checking his shoes thoroughly, two packets of gold were found concealed inside the soles of the shoes,” said a Customs official.

The official said that over 290 grams of gold valued at Rs 15,66,150 lakh was recovered.

The gold has been seized by the Customs officials.

“The recovered gold was seized under Section 110 of the Customs Act. The passenger has been placed under arrest under Section 104 of the Customs Act,” said the official.

He was then taken to a nearby government hospital where he was made to undergo a medical examination.

The Customs officials later presented him at a concerned court, and moved a plea requesting the court to send him to judicial custody.

A Customs official told the court that he was not required for further questioning.

The court after hearing their contention remanded him to judicial custody. He was later lodged in a jail.

Further investigation into the matter is on.
