Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov Win 2021 Nobel Peace Prize

Oslo: Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov have received the 2021 Nobel Peace prize for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace.

This has been announced by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

Maria Ressa is CEO of Philippines based news organisation Rappler while Dmitry Andreyevich Muratov is editor-in-chief of the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta.

Ressa uses freedom of expression to expose abuse of power, use of violence and growing authoritarianism in her native country, the Philippines. Muratov has for decades defended freedom of speech in Russia under increasingly challenging conditions, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said.

Last year’s prize went to the World Food Programme for its efforts to combat hunger and food insecurity around the globe.
