London: New Zealand suffered a massive setback ahead of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup with top bowler Tim Southee suffering an injury during the fourth ODI against England at the Lord’s here on Friday.
Southee suffered a dislocated and fractured bone in his right thumb while attempting to take a catch in the 14th over as England posted 311/9 in their 50 overs.
“An x-ray has confirmed that Tim Southee dislocated and fractured a bone in his right thumb while attempting to take a catch in the 14th over of the 1st innings. A timeline for his recovery will be established tomorrow when he undergoes further assessment,” the New Zealand team informed in a statement on social media platform X on Friday.
Though the New Zealand team management will be conducting further assessment of Southee’s injury, he faces the threat of missing next month’s World Cup in India. A fracture in the thumb will need a lengthy period away from the game.
Meanwhile, opener Finn Allen has been cleared of any fracture or break after injuring the little finger on his right-hand while on as a substitute fielder.
