Odisha: 378 Drunk Drivers Arrested in a Day

Bhubaneswar: Taking stringent action against drunk driving, the Odisha Police and Transport Department arrested as many as 378 persons, who indulge in driving under the influence of alcohol, in a single day across the State.

During the night long joint special drive on Friday, the Odisha Police and Transport officials detained 377 vehicles of the offenders and arrested 378 drunk drivers.

In the state wide drive to crackdown on drunken driving, as many 466 drunken drivers were detected out of which the RTO officials have detained 198 and the Police Dept has detained 268 drunken drivers. The drive launched in all the 3 regional zones ie North, Southern & Central.

In accordance with the directives of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, the authorities suspended 179 driving licenses (DLs) of the violators.

As per the new Motor Vehicles Act, in case of drunken driving, the first-time offenders will face imprisonment untp 6 months or fine upto Rs 10,000. The second offence, if committed within 2 years, can lead upto two years prison term or fine of Rs 15,000.
