Odisha’s Disaster Management Model Lauded at National Level

Bhubaneswar: Cyclone Biparjoy, which made a landfall near Jakhau Port in Gujarat’s Kutch district , has left a trail of destruction in the state.

The natural disaster had disrupted everyday life on an unprecedented scale.

Over 900 villages have been left without power supply and several houses and shops were damaged in the cyclone. Thousands of trees were uprooted, communication towers and electricity poles collapsed, and kutcha houses flattened. Two people died in Bhavnagar district, according to reports.

Nearly 100 trains originating, passing through or terminating in the affected districts of Gujarat have been cancelled.

In the wake of this powerful cyclone, Odisha’s disaster management strategies have once come to the limelight at the national level.

Lauding Odisha’s disaster management model, award-winning journalist Rajdeep Sardesai said, “What Odisha began in the recent past, the rest of the country is doing today: effective response to cyclones.”

In a tweet, the veteran journalist wrote, “Terrific work done by the NDRF, Gujarat administration and people of Gujarat to face upto challenge of Cyclone Biperjoy . What Odisha began in the recent past, the rest of the country is doing today: effective response to cyclones”.

From the severe loss faced during the super cyclone of 1999, Odisha is now a model in disaster management acknowledged both at the national and international level.

During 23 years since the Super Cyclone, the Odisha Government has done everything possible to make the State a safer place during disasters.Odisha today has the most robust infrastructure for disaster management. The world has recognized the State’s efforts in all these years.

Recently, the Odisha Government has received the prestigious Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar-2023 for its excellent work in Disaster Management.
