TDCCOL Initiates Efforts To Get GI Tag For Koraput Coffee

Koraput: With Koraput Coffee gaining popularity all across the world for its distinct flavor and organic properties, the Government of Odisha has initiated efforts to get the GI tag for this. The Tribal Development Co-operative Corporation of Odisha Ltd., has made initial moves in this regard to give a unique identification to Koraput Coffee.

The efforts of the district administration along with the Tourism Department, TDCCOL and Coffee Board, Koraput Coffee has today become the most sought after coffee in the niche coffee market in the country. The Tribal Development Co-operative Corporation of Odisha Ltd., has started compiling documents related to the uniqueness of Koraput coffee in order to prepare for the application process for GI status. The documents will include information related to the history, quality, and processing of Koraput Coffee.

The Coffee Board of India has already received the GI tag on March 1, 2019 for coffee produced in the Araku Valley of Andhra Pradesh. The coffee produced in Koraput is included in the Araku Coffee list of Andhra Pradesh and is GI certified. But, the Koraput Coffee has not been given any special identification. Mansi Nimbhal, MD TDCCOL, also confirmed the efforts and said that “Looking at the demand for Koraput Coffee in the national and international markets, it has been decided to apply for the GI tag.”
