No Fare to Be Charged from Migrants Returning Home, Says SC

New Delhi: In a significant development, the Supreme Court today said that no fare should be charged from migrants returning to their home states by train or bus and it should be shared by the states.

Taking up the issue regarding the plight of the migrants, the apex court said the stranded migrant labourers who want to travel back to their home states should not be stopped.

The Railways should provide migrants food and water in trains, a bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, S K Kaul and M R Shah said while hearing a suo motu case initiated by it on migrant labourers.

The top court further said that migrants found travelling on foot must be immediately taken to shelters and provided food and all basic facilities.

The Centre informed told the court that it has sent 97 lakh migrant workers home since May 1.
