Bhubaneswar: Odisha is likely to get the first showers of south-west monsoon by June 12-14, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
The weather department said that the onset was delayed it is expected to hit India’s Southern Coast on June 8.
“The east-west shear zone now runs roughly along Lat. 8°N between 3.1 & 3.6 km above mean sea level across Lakshadweep Maldives Comorin area. It is very likely to shift northwards gradually. In addition, an offshore trough is very likely to develop around 8th June, off Maharashtra coast to Kerala coast. In association with these favourable conditions, Southwest Monsoon is very likely to set in over Kerala around 8th June,” the IMD stated.
Monsoon rains usually arrive on the southern tip of Kerala around June 1 and retreat from Rajasthan by September.
India is likely to see average monsoon rains this year, the weather office said last week, which should support agricultural production and economic growth in Asia’s third-biggest economy, where half of the farmland lacks irrigation.
The cloudy weather in the coastal areas of the state is due to a depression formed in North-West Bay of Bengal over Bangladesh. Similar weather conditions will continue for three more days after which the temperatures are expected to soar once again, the IMD said.
