Puri: The mortal remains of former Odisha minister and Pipili MLA late Pradeep Maharathy were consigned to flames at the Swargadwara here today with full state honours.
The last rites of the veteran BJD leader were performed by his son in the presence of Puri Collector Balwant Singh, SP Akhileswar Singh, School and Mass Education Minister Samir Ranjan Dash and several BJD leaders.
Earlier today, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had expressed his deep grief at the passing away of Maharathy.
The Chief Minister has described Maharathy as a stalwart of Biju Janata Dal and a long time associate of Biju babu and a true leader of people.
Chief Minister conveyed his deep sympathy to the bereaved family and the people of Pipili.
Pradeep Maharathy was born on 4th July 1955 at Khorapada in Puri district. He was elected to Odisha Legislative Assembly from Pipili Assembly Constituency 7 times in 1985, 1990, 2000, 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019. He was Government Deputy Chief Whip in 1990 and Government Chief Whip in 2000. He was Minister, Agriculture from 2011 to 2012, Minister, Agriculture, Fisheries & Animal Resources Development from 2014 to 2017 and Minister, Agriculture and Farmers Empowerment, Panchayati Raj & Drinking Water and Fisheries & Animal Resources Development from 2017 to 2019. He passed away in the early hours of 4th October, 2020 at the age of 66.
