Historic Day for Odisha as Droupadi Murmu Becomes 15th President of Country

Bhubaneswar: Today is a historic day for Odisha and the country as a whole as Droupadi Murmu took oath as the 15th President of India.

Chief Justice of India Justice N V Ramana administered the Oath of Office of the highest constitutional post to the new President at the Central Hall of Parliament.

The Oath Taking Ceremony was followed by a 21-gun salute and the address by the new President.

The swearing in ceremony was attended by many dignitaries including the outgoing President Ramanath Kobind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, members of the Council of Ministers, the three Service Chiefs, and others including the Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik.

With Droupadi Murmu taking the Oath, she became the first tribal President of the largest democracy in the world. She is the second woman to hold the President’s post.

In her first address to the august gathering in the Central Hall of the Parliament, President Murmu said “Satisfying to me that the people who were devoid of development for years – the poor, Dalits, backward, the tribals- can see me as their reflection. My nomination has blessings of the poor behind it, it’s a reflection of the dreams and capabilities of crores of women”.
