Berhampur: The long-standing demand of the people of Berhampur for the construction of an overbridge at the Gate Bazar square, one of the busiest squares in the silk city, is going to be fulfilled soon. The construction of the overbridge will start soon as the State Government has accelerated the process for it.
The detailed project report (DPR) for the construction of the Gate Bazar flyover is almost ready. The land acquisition and construction work will begin after the approval of the State Government.
The alignment survey was conducted after the Odisha Bridge & Construction Corporation Ltd (OBCC) completed the survey. A Bhubaneswar-based company has prepared the DPR. An 1120-meter long and 22 meter wide bridge and approach road will be constructed, informed OBCC.
At present, the width of the road near Gate Bazar square is from 14 meters to 18 meters. Therefore, land acquisition is required for 4 to 8 meters more. The fly overbridge will start from Aska Road Niladribihar Square and end near City Hospital.
Upon completion of this overbridge, it will resolve the traffic problem at the busiest square. There will be smooth movement of vehicles from within the city and outside such as Hinjli, Aska, Bhanjanagar and Digaphandi at the square. Meanwhile, heavy good vehicles coming from outside the city will take the ringroad from Ratanpur and exit to the national highway near Jagannathpur or Haldiapadar. No more cargo lanes will enter the city. Long-distance and night coach buses, town buses, four-wheelers etc. will ply through the Gate Bazar overbridge. Due to this, it is expected that there will be less traffic and accidents.
Notably, several overbridges have been constructed by the State Government for the ease of movements of the residents of Berhampur.
The first overbridge of the city was built at Kampalli square, later on, at Haldiapadar, Gopalpur Square, Engineering School Square, and within a few months, the Gosainuagaon-Railway Station overbridge became operational.
Now, the State Government has accelerated the process for the construction of Gate Bazar overbridge, much to the joy of the people of silk city.
