Patna: Bihar DGP Gupteshwar Pandey on Tuesday took voluntary retirement from service, triggering speculations that the outspoken officer would contest the coming state Assembly polls. Pandey’s request seeking voluntary retirement was approved by Governor Phagu Chauhan, a notification issued by the state home department said.
Pandey is likely to contest the forthcoming Assembly polls from Buxar, sources said. He has reportedly been assured a ticket from the BJP. Refuting charges of being ‘rewarded’ in the Bihar Police’s probe into Sushant case, Pandey clarified that the probe cannot be connected to his VRS. “I only acted according to law,” Pandey said.
He also said, “I have not joined any political party as of now and I have not taken any decision on it yet. As far as social work is concerned, I can do it without entering politics too.”
Sanjiv Kumar Singhal, the Director-General of Civil Defence and Fire Services, has been given the additional charge of DGP Bihar till further orders.
