Elephant Chandan Dies in Nandankanan

Bhubaneswar: A ten year old male elephant named Chandan has died at the Nandankanan zoological park in Bhubaneswar today.

Chandan suddenly became ill on 13.9.2019 Afternoon with reduced appetite, nasal discharge and swollen glands in both sides of its face. Immediately treatment was started by Zoo veterinarians on the same day as per the advise of Centre for Wildlife Health OUAT Bhubaneswar. During the course of treatment, it breathed its last today at 3.40 AM. The death is suspected due to Herpes virus infection. The cause of death shall be ascertained after Post Mortem today.

After the death of this elephant, Nandankanan has 6 female elephants at present. The zoo authorities have now started taking steps to prevent spreading of this virus and to provide advance preventive treatment to remaining vulnerable elephants.

Nandan was rescued from Chandaka forest July 2010.
