Hockey Olympian Birendra Lakra Joins as DSP in Odisha Police

Cuttack: Hockey Olympian Birendra Lakra has joined as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Odisha Police.

Lakra, who was part of the Indian men’s hockey team that bagged bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics, had received the offer letter for appointment as DSP during the felicitation by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in August last year.

Congratulating the Olympian, Odisha Police today tweeted, “Heartiest Congratulations to Birendra Lakra for joining as DSP in Odisha Police. It’s a matter of immense pleasure to have the Olympian in Odisha Police who brought glory to Odisha and India”.


Lakra today formally joined the Odisha Police in the presence of DGP Sunil Kumar Bansal, ADG (Law and Order) RK Sharma and IG (Personnel) S Praveen Kumar.

The DGP has congratulated Lakra for his new role.

Notably, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had felicitated Birendra Lakra and other Odisha players who were part of the Indian Hockey teams that participated in the Tokyo Olympics.

The CM had handed over cash awards of Rs 2.5 crore and the offer letter for appointment as DSP to Birendra Lakra and Amit Rohidas who were part of the men’s hockey team that bagged bronze medal in the Olympics.

Lakra was the vice-captain of the men’s team.
