Bhubaneswar: In a dismal show, the Odisha unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lost its security deposit in the Brajrajnagar Assembly Constituency in Jharsuguda district.
The security deposit of BJP candidate and former MLA Radharani Panda has been forfeited as she faced a humiliating defeat from BJD candidate Alaka Mohanty who won the by-poll with record margin.
If a candidate fails to get 1/6 of the total valid votes franchised in that constituency then the amount deposited by the candidate is forfeited by the Election Commission of India.
Even though, the results of the Brajrajnagar by-poll is yet to be officially confirmed, the latest trends indicate that the BJP has forfeited its security deposit as the party candidate received less than the required number of votes to save the security deposit.
Radharani Panda has secured a total of 22560 votes, which is less than the one sixth of the total valid votes franchised in the by-election. As many as 153096 voters exercised their franchise in the by-poll, as per reports.
In the 2019 general elections, Radharani Panda got 68,153 votes and remained at the second position even though she was defeated by BJD candidate late Kishore Kumar Mohanty.
The results of Brajrajnagar by-poll has given clear indication that the people of the Assembly constituency have once again discarded the saffron party.
