International Women’s Day Special – The Journey of Young Singing Sensation Lisa Mishra

Bhubaneswar: Imagine a life transformation from a Data Analyst based out of Chicago to becoming a heartthrob for millions of youth in India. A journey that is so sudden and so special that has created a dazzling space for Bollywood youth sensation Lisa Mishra.

From a fourteen year old teenager uploading her singing experiments on the YouTube to recording songs for Hindu Musicals in some of the best Sound Studios of Mumbai, Lisa Mishra has come a long way in a short time.

Born in a Berhampur Odia family, Lisa was brought up in the US after her parents shifted there. Her love for Indian music continued despite being in a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Educated in the Massachusetts to become a Data Analyst, Lisa continued her musical and singing activities and at last caught the eyes of the Bollywood through her Instagram Postwhich transformed her life forever.

Today, with super hit songs like The Wakhra Song’ from the film ‘Judgementall Hai Kya’, reprise version of Veere Di Wedding’s ‘Tareefan’, and Chandigarh Mein song from Good Newwz have taken her to the height in Bollywood. One of her best performances was seen in ‘Let Me Love You’ by DJ Snake featuring J Bieber.

While Bollywood has become her dream destination today, she has not forgotten her origins.
According to her, “I have lived in Odisha till I was six years old and after that, I moved to the US with my parents. But I have never been away from Odisha for long since my entire extended family lives in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Berhampur. Berhampur literally lives inside me as I have a part of my childhood treasured there. And since my mother is from Puri, every year we visited Odisha, a trip to Puri was also a must in the list. I particularly miss the delicious Odia food, Jagannath temple, and my hometown.”

Her greatest and most cherished moment came when she put up a video on a Saturday night and went to bed. By the time she woke up, Sonam Kapoor had shared it on her Instagram and Rhea Kapoor was contacting her to fly out and officially record the acoustic version of Veere Di Wedding song ‘Tareefan’.

Lisa, a self-trained singer had started learning music at the age of four and by the age of 15, she started playing the guitar. Her singing try outs continued and in 2016 she worked for the Grammy Award-winning album Coloring Book. She has also worked with DJ Khaled and Big Sean. In 2018, she collaborated with Jamila Woods and lent her voice for the theme song of the Emmy-nominated web series “Brown Girls.”

Lisa’s educational background of two majors in Economics and Religion keep her happy in her profession. Topping the chartbusters is not her priority. She still enjoys her work as an analyst and of course she can change her mind and make Mumbai her home one day.
