Bhubaneswar: As many as 1621 people were killed in the lightning strikes in the last five years in Odisha.
State Revenue & Disaster Management Minister Sudam Marndi informed the Assembly on Friday.
A total of 340 persons died in the lightning strikes during 2018-19, 357 in 2019-20 and 274 during 2020-21 as per the official data.
Responding to a question raised by Congress MLA Tara Bahinipati in the House, the Minister said that the lightning took 472 lives during the year 2017 and 2018.
178 persons were killed in lightning strikes in the State this year so far, he added.
