Major Setback to Pakistan as UN Rejects Request For Intervention In J&K, Calls For Maximum Restraint

New Delhi: In a major setback to Pakistan, the United Nations has rejected Prime Minister Imran Khan’s appeal for intervention in Kashmir following the scrapping of Article 370.

The UN has reiterated that it is a bilateral dispute.

The UN Secretary-General António Guterres appealed for ‘maximum restraint’ over the territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

In a statement, the UN Secretary General said that he had been following the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, “with concern”, adding “the position of the United Nations on this region is governed by the Charter of the United Nations and applicable Security Council resolutions.”

Guterres’ spokesman Stephane Dujarric also added that the UN chief did not offer his good offices nor did he make any offer to mediate between India and Pakistan on Kashmir.

Instead, he referred to the Simla Agreement, which is a bilateral agreement between India and Pakistan and rejects any third-party mediation in the issue.
