Odisha CM Pledges to Keep Blue Planet Healthy on World Oceans Day

Bhubaneswar: On the occasion of World Oceans Day today, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has reaffirmed his pledge to keep blue planet healthy for sustainable use.

“Oceans are lifelines for our planet as they provide most of the oxygen we breathe, source of water that sustains life on Earth, major source of food and play critical part in regulating climate”, Naveen wrote in a Twitter post.

World Oceans Day is celebrated on June 8 every year since 2009 with an aim to raise global awareness of the challenges faced by the international community in connection with the oceans.

The concept of a ‘World Oceans Day’ was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro as a way to celebrate our world’s shared ocean and our personal connection to the sea.

The UN General Assembly recognised the important contribution of sustainable development and management of the resources and uses of the oceans and seas to the achievement of international development goals those contained in the United Nations Millennium Declaration.
