New Delhi: Amidst protests and raging debates on the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 across the country, leaders of Opposition parties met President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan here today and urged him to advise the Modi government to withdraw the Act.
A delegation of twelve parties led by Congress President Sonia Gandhi submitted a memorandum to the President in this regard.
Talking to reporters after the meeting, Sonia Gandhi said, “All of us, representatives of 12 different political parties have met the President to plead with him to intervene in the situation in the Northeast, which is now spreading throughout the country including the capital in the Jamia University, because of the Act.
The situation is very serious and the way police dealt with peaceful protests in Jamia Millia Islamia is anguishing, she said.
The Congress President also came down heavily on the Centre accusing it of muzzling the voices of people.
CPI(M) General Secretary, Sitaram Yechury, Derek O’Brien of TMC, Ram Gopal Yadav of Samajwadi Party, T R Baalu from DMK, RJD’s Manoj Jha and CPI General Secretary D Raja were among those part of the delegation.
